esLife™ EZ Service Life Estimation Table
Limitations & Warnings

  1. Do not use this chart for any cartridges other than the specific North gas/vapor respirator cartridges that are listed. Service time estimates do not apply to other North cartridges or cartridges from other manufacturers, and cannot be used to predict particulate filter service times. For service life estimates on other North gas/vapor cartridges use North esLife™ software.

  2. Do not use service time estimates for atmospheres containing mixtures of contaminants. Actual service times for gases or vapors in a mixture may be substantially less than this chart would estimate for a gas or vapor present alone in the atmosphere. Use this chart only for singular gas/vapor contaminants present alone in the contaminated atmosphere.

  3. Do not use this chart with inaccurate or unreliable site-specific data. Failure to choose site condition data accurately will result in unreliable service time estimates and change schedules, exposing the respirator user to the risk of serious injury, illness or death.

  4. Do not use this chart if the relative humidity of the worksite is above 65%, or the workrate of the respirator user is high (above 40 liters per minute). North esLife software can be used to estimate service times with other relative humidities and workrates.

  5. For organic vapor contaminants that have a boiling point of less than 65°C (149°F), the user must change cartridges no less frequently than at the end of each work shift, even if the chart service time estimate would permit less frequent cartridge changes. Organic vapors with this characteristic may desorb from the charcoal in the cartridge when not in use overnight. This leaves high concentrations of contaminant in the cartridge housing free to move into the respirator mask when use is resumed, exposing the user to the contaminant and the risk of serious injury or illness.

  6. Service time estimates may vary from actual service times by as much as ±50%. If the user experiences the odor, taste or any irritation from the contaminant before the end of the estimated service time, the user must immediately leave the contaminated area, change cartridges before reentering the work area, and follow an accelerated cartridge change schedule. If cartridge changes must be made too frequently, an airline (supplied air) respirator should be used.

  7. North gas/vapor cartridges cannot be used for some contaminants because the contaminants have one or more of the following characteristics; they require combination gas/vapor cartridges or combination gas/vapor/particulate cartridges, e.g. Coal Tar Pitch Volatiles; they are particulates only, e.g. asbestos; they generate high heats of reaction with the sorbent, e.g. Bromine; or there is no effective sorbent, e.g. Carbon Monoxide.

Contaminants having any of these characteristics have been omitted from the table.

  8. OSHA regulation 29 CFR § 1910.134 no longer allows a contaminant's warning properties (smell, taste, or irritation) to be used to determine cartridge breakthrough. The user must have a respirator equipped with a NIOSH approved end-of-service-life-indicator (ESLI) for the specific contaminant or must use a cartridge change-out schedule for the specific cartridge and contaminant. However, if a change-out schedule is developed for use against a contaminant with poor warning properties (i.e. smell, taste, or irritation at or above the permissible exposure limit), the user loses the ability to determine if the change-out schedule is adequate and the respirator is functioning properly because the user will not be able to detect breakthrough.

For this reason, neither North nor NIOSH recommends the use of air-purifying respirators for such contaminants even though OSHA does not prohibit the use of air purifying respirators for protection against contaminants having poor warning properties. For protection against contaminants having poor warning properties, a supplied air respirator should be used.

North Train the Trainer Program

North's Train the Tainer ProgramOSHA Regulation 29 CFR §1910.134(b) requirements for a minimal acceptable respiratory program states in paragraph (3): "The user shall be instructed and trained in the proper use of respirators and their limitations".

The North Train the Trainer Program will help you meet this OSHA requirement by providing you with the skills you need to train your North respirator users. In this program you will learn what an effective Respiratory Protection Program is and how to put your program in place. You will become familiar with the types of respirators available, and the proper procedures used in fit testing. You will also learn how to instruct wearers on how to do negative and positive fit checking.

In addition to the comprehensive training of the use and limitations of North respirators, you will receive a North Trainer Materials Package which includes a set of North Respirator Instructions for Use, and a demonstration of North Fit Test Kits*. Open discussions of any concerns or special problems you may have encountered is encouraged. Hands on time will be allotted for fit testing procedures

Successful completion of the Train the Trainer Program certifies you as a knowledgeable and competent trainer, fit tester and user of North respiratory protection products, helping you to bring your respiratory protection program into compliance with OSHA Regulation 29 CFR §1910.134(b).
